How many hairs is it normal to lose each day?
For most people, losing roughly 50 to 100 hairs a day is considered usual. This varies with the person and hair density and is not by itself a sign of disease.
The hair cycle means some hair falls every day and new hair grows. On wash days more hair can seem to fall because hairs gathered over several days come away at once.
What matters more than the count is a change: clear thinning, much more hair than before on the comb or in the shower, or hairs becoming finer are reasons to have it assessed.
Which signs mean you should see a doctor?
Sudden heavy shedding, patchy loss, scalp pain, redness, crusting or sores, loss of eyebrows or lashes, or other accompanying symptoms are reasons to seek assessment.
Tiredness, weight change, irregular periods, intolerance of cold or heat and skin changes may point to an internal condition. In such cases hair loss may not be the sole sign.
Examination is also useful when shedding lasts longer than a few months or begins after childbirth, a serious illness, surgery or a newly started medicine. Early assessment can help catch conditions that carry a risk of irreversible loss in time.
Which specialty should you see?
The first step is usually a dermatology clinic. If a hormonal or metabolic cause is suspected, endocrinology, gynecology or internal medicine may be involved.
A dermatologist examines the scalp, may perform dermoscopy and requests tests. In women with irregular periods or increased body hair, hormonal assessment may be considered.
Hair loss complaints can also be assessed at medical aesthetics clinics, but if an underlying disease is suspected the doctor may refer you to the appropriate specialty. At Dr. Berktaş’s consultation the suitability of medical options is assessed.
How should you prepare for the appointment?
Noting the medicines you take, illnesses you have had, family history of hair loss and when shedding began makes the visit more useful. Older photographs help too.
Recent childbirth, febrile illness, dieting, stress and newly started medicines or supplements guide the doctor. Also mention hair dye, perms or tight hairstyles.
After taking a detailed history, the doctor requests any tests needed and discusses options with you. Sharing your expectations openly helps keep the plan realistic.
Frequently asked questions
Does losing more than 100 hairs a day mean disease?
Not by itself. If there is a marked increase or thinning, an examination is recommended.
Which tests are requested for hair loss?
It depends on your history; iron, vitamin D, B12 and thyroid values are often checked. The doctor decides what is needed.
Can stress alone cause shedding?
Severe stress can cause temporary shedding, but an assessment is appropriate to rule out other causes.
Is there urgency with hair loss?
In some scalp diseases early assessment matters. For sudden, patchy or painful loss, do not delay.
