How does skin look after laser and which signs are normal?
Redness, mild swelling, burning or a sunburn-like feeling are common in the first days. Intense treatments can also bring crusting and peeling.
After hair removal, raised red bumps around hair follicles are common and usually fade within hours to days. With pigment or resurfacing lasers, darkening and fine crusting can be part of the process.
Timing and appearance differ with the treatment, so general information should not replace the doctor's personal instructions.
How should skin be cared for after a session?
Lukewarm water, a gentle cleanser, a moisturiser or repair product the doctor suggests and daily sunscreen are the general framework. Perfumed, acidic and abrasive products are put off.
Crusts and peeling should come off by themselves; picking can raise the risk of scars and discolouration. Hot showers, sauna, steam rooms and intense exercise are usually postponed until the doctor says otherwise.
When to restart make-up, retinoids and peels varies with the treatment; the doctor's advice should be followed on this.
Why is sun protection so important?
After laser the skin is more sensitive to the sun, and exposure can raise the risk of discolouration that may last a long time. Broad-spectrum sunscreen, a hat and shade are the basic measures.
Sunscreen needs to be applied in enough quantity and renewed through the day. Ultraviolet exposure also occurs on cloudy days and by a window.
Sunbeds are not suitable after laser. See the sun protection and laser in summer pages for details.
When should the doctor be contacted?
Fever, pus, a bad smell, steadily increasing pain, rapidly spreading redness, large blisters or unexpected colour change call for contacting the treating doctor without delay.
These signs can point to infection, a burn or an excessive reaction. Contacting the doctor is the right step, rather than trying to treat the skin at home with medicines or creams.
Eye pain, blurred vision or light sensitivity calls for an eye doctor. Symptoms such as difficulty breathing or facial swelling need emergency care.
Frequently asked questions
How many days does redness last after laser?
Hours to a few days after mild treatment and weeks after intense treatment. It varies with the treatment and the person.
Can the face be washed after laser?
Gentle cleansing with lukewarm water is usually possible. The doctor sets when and with which product.
When do crusts fall off?
Usually within a few days to one or two weeks on their own; it depends on the depth of treatment.
Can I exercise after laser?
Heavy sweating and friction can increase irritation. A pause for the period the doctor states is generally advised.
Is itching normal after laser?
Mild itching can occur during healing, but scratching does harm. If it is severe or widespread, consult the doctor.
